Navigating the Website

Welcome to the IWBC Toronto 2010 website.  We're very excited to be hosting this event this year and we hope to welcome lots of new people to enjoy Toronto and meet fellow brass players from around the world.  There's lots of opportunity to get involved...

Under the "Contact Us" page of this website, you'll find a forum where we invite everyone to make suggestions regarding what you would like to see at the conference, talk about issues and generally spread the excitement of the event.  While you're on the "Contact Us" page, why not fill in the volunteer form, email it or fax it back and get involved!

Would you like to share a story about a woman brass player that has inspired you or read memories and tributes that other folks have shared?  Under the "Guest Artist" page, we have created a "Women of Note" tab.  Check it out -- a few people have already got the ball rolling.  Our plan is to eventually compile all of these lovely stories and create a keepsake journal as our gift to each of you for registering for the conference.

Speaking of registration, the form is now ready.  There are three ways to register:

Print out the pdf file on the registration page and fax back to us with your credit card

Print out the pdf file and mail to us with your payment

Complete the online registration form

We're looking forward to receiving hundreds of registrations from around the world.

Inspiration, Preparation and Tomato Sauce from Karen Donnelly;

Janet Anderson
:  Tell us about your mentors and role models. Who has inspired you?

Karen Donnelly:  My early mentors on the trumpet were of course all my teachers including James Thompson and the Montreal Symphony trumpet section back in the 80s. Now I would say that I am always inpsired by today's major trumpet players like Phil Smith and David Bilger but I also feel inspired by the musicianship and beauty that my colleagues at work bring to our orchestra on a daily basis.

JA:  What do you do to mentally prepare for a major performance?
KD:  I like to do lots of visualizations when I have a big show.  I imagine the stage where we will be playing, and the audience having a nice time listening to our concert.  Of course, the mental preparation goes hand in hand with the musical preparation.  If you do
the work, you will be confident to play it.

JA:  What do you do to physically prepare for a major performance? (running, yoga etc)

KD:  Lately I've been doing more walking than anything.  I don't listen to music while I walk but I use the time to think and reflect on my stuff.  Its good for the body and the
mind.

JA:  How do you re-charge after a tiring tour?

KD:  I always nest after a tour.  We like to make a tomato sauce as soon as we get home from a long tour.

JA:  What book are you reading right now?
KD:  I've been racing through the Patricia Cornwell "Scarpetta" series.  They are light and an
easy read.  These books are my reward after my music or research reading is done for the day then I enjoy a bit of fiction to relax.

President's Greeting

Welcome to the web site of the 2010 International Women’s Brass Conference. We are extremely grateful to our conference co-hosts, Joan Watson and Denny Christianson, for taking on the planning and execution of this our first truly international conference. Joan, Conference Coordinator Mary Flynn and a massive team of volunteers are diligently working to plan an inviting, exciting and educational experience for us at Humber College in Toronto. I invite you to look around the web site, take part in the Susan Slaughter International Solo Brass Competition and register to attend this spectacular event. Be sure to join our email list and take part in the forum too.
I would be remiss if I did not also recognize the hard work of Gail Robertson who recently made the difficult decision to resign as President of the IWBC. Gail contributed an immense amount of time to the planning of this conference and her tireless support of this endeavor is indeed noteworthy.
Be sure to register early and I look forward to seeing you in Toronto, catching up with old friends and making many new ones.

Cheers!
Kelly Watkins, IWBC President

Host of the 2010 IWBC: Joan Watson

To everyone visiting our IWBC Toronto 2010 site, I extend a generous welcome to join us on an exciting journey.

This journey will last the better part of a year and will be one of building a community of like-minded people via the website and eventually the conference itself. This conference is an opportunity for all of us to commune, enthuse and share our passion for brass playing in all its forms and in all its levels. We all like to make "noise" or we wouldn't be brass players. So let's hear it.  Voice your stories here. Encourage everyone you love to come and participate, party and make music!  Our Lakeside community will welcome you with open arms next June. You will have the time of your life and memories to inspire you for years to come.

We're so proud to have Denny Christianson, Director of Music at Humber College, as our co-host of this event.  Click here for more information about Denny

Greetings from Susan Slaughter

While this is 2010, the excitement, awareness, and energy is always
the same.

Of what am I speaking???  Attending the IWBC conference is a life
changing event.

Nowhere else, not the ITG, ITA, IHS will you encounter so many outstanding women brass musicians on every brass instrument.

Nowhere else may you speak openly about your struggles in the music industry and hear how others have overcome their "challenges" without being criticized.

If you have not attended any of our other IWBC conferences, then make this one your very first.  You will leave the conference inspired by what women brass musicians from all over the world have and are achieving.

Your "batteries" will be recharged to "carry on" and continue to pursue YOUR DREAM.

Please join us this Summer.

Susan Slaughter, founder IWBC
and
Principal Trumpet
Saint Louis Symphony
